About Our Superintendent
Maurice “Mo” Green is the third permanent superintendent in the history of the Guilford County Schools district.
He comes to this position with considerable experience in managing the academic, operations, human resources and finances of a major public school system.
Green previously served as deputy superintendent at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, one of the nation’s largest and most celebrated urban school systems. While there, he was part of a dynamic leadership team that passed a bond referendum of more than $500 million for the construction of new, replacement and renovated schools, developed an ambitious, well-received strategic plan and attained new heights in academic excellence that included seeing 14 of its high schools being named among the nation’s top 1,000.
Green holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics and a law degree, both from Duke University. Upon graduating from law school, his first job was a prestigious clerkship in the chambers of Federal District Court Judge N. Carlton Tilley, Jr. in Greensboro. The following year, he held another clerkship in the Sixth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. After completing his clerkship, Green joined the blue chip Charlotte law firm of Smith Helms Mulliss & Moore LLP. He worked his way up to partner after six years before joining Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as general counsel in 2001.
In 2006, he became chief operating officer of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Early in 2008, he was given the additional position of deputy superintendent. In his capacity as deputy superintendent and chief operating officer, he ran the day-to-day operations of a public agency with a budget of $1.17 billion, 135,000 students and nearly 18,000 employees. He oversaw academic services, human resources, finance, school safety, technology, accountability, and school law enforcement, among other areas.
Green received numerous accolades for his work at CMS as well as in the community. His many honors include “Top 40 Under 40” from the Charlotte Business Journal and the Black Women’s Caucus of Charlotte’s Trailblazer award. He served on numerous boards in Charlotte, including the YMCA, the Arts and Science Council and the Crisis Assistance Ministry. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Green is married to Stephanie, a school psychologist. They have two children, Isaiah, 8, and Brianna, 12.
