Cultural Arts (Arts Education)

Mission: "In Guilford County, our arts education mission is to impact achievement through integrated arts activities that enhance the motivational, intellectual, and social development of all children."

Arts Education is a collective term that denotes learning and instruction in four separately distinctive subject areas: dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts. As a result of arts instruction, students will be able to communicate at a basic level in the four arts disciplines, to communicate proficiently in at least one arts area, and to develop and present basic analyses of works of art. Students will also develop an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods and to relate various types of arts knowledge and skills within and across all disciplines. The arts develop problem solving, problem recognition, and higher order thinking skills. Guilford County Schools offers music and visual art instruction K-12. Dance and theatre arts are offered at the high school level and in elementary and middle school performing arts magnets.

Arts Education Partnerships

Guilford County Schools is proud of its community-based partnerships in the area of arts education. These partnerships enhance learning and expand our curriculum. This is especially important for students that exhibit learning differences/styles. Currently, Guilford County Schools has established over twelve system-wide community partnerships (see chart below). In addition, many individual partnerships exist between individual schools and the broader arts community. Many other collaborations continue to grow that are not program based, but impact the quality and comprehensive nature of our cultural arts programs. These collaborations include The Greensboro Music Academy, HP Theatre Arts Galleries, United Arts Council of Greensboro, HP Area Arts Council, Touring Theatre Ensemble, NC Theatre for Young People, Greensboro/High Point Ballet, local colleges/universities, and many more. The partnerships are funded from the school system's local budget and a special allocation from the County Commissioners.
