The Guilford County Board of Education believes that the process of arranging the school year should take into consideration the goals of effective teaching, successful learning experiences, efficient use of resources and facilities, sound fiscal management, effective public relations and good student attendance. The Board believes the public needs to plan activities around the school year and deserves as much advance notice of the school year as is practical. Therefore, the Superintendent shall present the proposed calendar for the next school year to the Board no later than the regular October Board Meeting. The calendar shall be shared with the community and there shall be a period of not less than four weeks for suggestions and comments. The Board shall approve the calendar in accordance with its other policies and procedures following public and staff input and comments.

The Superintendent is empowered to alter the calendar during the school year to the extent that it becomes necessary as a result of hazardous weather or other conditions. Special schools such as year-round schools, extended year schools, andEarly/Middle College schoolswill be governed by a special calendar unique to that school setting.

The calendar proposed to the Board by the Superintendent shall be consistent with the limitations and provisions of State law and take into consideration the construction schedules at schools, the closing of school during major elections, and the observance of Memorial Day holiday by teachers and students.
