GCS Students Receive More Than 77 Million in Scholarships

Class of 2008 Earns More than $77 Million in Scholarships

Once again, Guilford County Schools (GCS) seniors have earned record-breaking scholarship dollars, turning their success in the classroom into more than $77 million in scholarship awards. Collectively, these bright young minds earned scholarships totaling $77,055,614 —an all-time high for the district and almost $10 million more than last year!

“As a district, we should be extremely proud of our hard-working seniors who earned more than $77 million in scholarships,” said Dr. Eric Becoats, co-interim superintendent. “We should also congratulate high school counselors, staff and administrators for their hard work and diligence in helping students secure financial aid opportunities for higher education.”

In the past five years, the total dollars earned by seniors has continued to increase, from $40,580,599 in the 2002-03 school year. Last year, seniors earned more than $68 million. The increase is due to a number of factors, including more community and faith-based organizations donating scholarships, counselors identifying more opportunities and the district holding College Night, which is an event where students and parents can speak with representatives and admissions personnel from more than 150 colleges and universities across the nation.

In addition to academic awards, students in the district earned scholarships based on a variety of criteria including participation in community service, athletics, financial need and specialization in a particular field of study.
