Guilford County Schools Among the Nation’s Top 100 Schools

The Early College at Guilford and Grimsley High are two of the Top 100 High Schools throughout the United States, according to Newsweek magazine. The Early College at Guilford ranked number 21 in the nation while Grimsley ranked 82, making the list for the fourth year in a row.

To determine a school’s rank, the magazine uses a Challenge Index, which calculates the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students divided by the number of graduating seniors.

“It is an honor for The Early College at Guilford and Grimsley to be recognized as one of the top high schools in the nation,” said Dr. Eric Becoats, co-interim superintendent for Guilford County Schools (GCS). “In today’s economy, academic rigor is a key to ensuring our students have the resources needed to be successful. As a district, it is imperative that we continue to encourage students to enroll in AP and IB courses.”

Other schools worth noting include Southeast High, which improved 216 rankings from last year. Northwest High and Ragsdale High also improved their ranking from last year. Overall, GCS had 15 schools included in the Nation’s Top 1,200 High Schools. All 15 are considered to be in the top five percent of public high schools nationwide.

The Early College at Guilford is North Carolina's first early college high school. The school offers a writing intensive, fast-paced curriculum in partnership with Guilford College. Grimsley is one of four high schools within GCS that offers the IB program.
