Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary Welcomes Soldiers Returning from Iraq
On Tuesday, June 10 at 8:30 a.m., Capt. Jeffrey Duncan and Sgt. Devon McKinnon of the 396 th Medical Company will visit with students at Monticello-Brown Summit. Throughout the year, students at the school wrote more than 600 cards and letters to members of the 396 th while they served in Iraq. The students also sent candy, small toiletries and other items during the holiday season. In return, the soldiers sent letters to the children and a package of interesting items from Iraq.
Duncan will speak to the student body, staff and parents during the Eagle Celebration, and McKinnon will present a flag and a plaque to the students. For more information, please contact Principal Benita Lawrence at 336-656-4010.
Celebrating Fifth-Graders at Washington Elementary

Frazier Elementary Hosts Kindergarten Orientation
On Thursday, June 12 at 9:30 a.m., Frazier will host a Kindergarten Orientation for upcoming kindergartners and their parents. A catered breakfast will be served and parents will receive information about kindergarten. In addition, students will receive books and a goody bag. Magnet Schools of America Conference Presentations
Magnet Director Tony Lamair Burks II and Dr. Erika Taylor from the Education Alliance at Brown University recently co-presented a session, “Rigorous Evaluation of Magnet Schools Activities” at the 2008 Magnet Schools of America National Conference in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The session was offered in the conference’s “Staying on Track - Capacity & Sustainability” strand and also included presenters from a Minnesota school district. Burks and Taylor shared the approved plan for evaluating six Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant-funded schools. The presentation featured an overview of Guilford County Schools as well as information about quasi-experimental design, questions, participants, analysis plan and anticipated challenges. Two Southwest Elementary Students Break Accelerated Reader Record
Two students from Southwest Elementary broke a longstanding school record for Accelerated Reader points this year. Third-grader Madison Collins earned 880.3 points, and fifth-grader Nikita Bisht earned 951.9 points. The previous record, which has stood since 2000, was 668.6 points.
Accelerated Reader is a computer program that gives short comprehension quizzes on books the students have read. Points are awarded based on difficulty and length of the books. For more information, please contact Technology Assistant Libby Chestnut at 336-819-2992.
The Academy at Lincoln Tops the District in First in Math ® Online Game
For being top-ranked in the First In Math ® Online Program, students at Lincoln were honored by program representative Barbara Asteak and Mark Baker of Tyco Electronics. Tyco Electronics sponsors the program.
Lincoln has an elementary team and a middle school team. The middle school team ranked 102nd in the state and 173rd in the nation, while the elementary team ranked 106th in the state. These elementary and middle school students earned nearly 90,000 award stickers, similar to points in tracking student progress. Dudley High Step Team Victorious at “North Carolina Schools Got Talent” Show
The Dudley “Blaque Queens” female step team won the “North Carolina Schools Got Talent” show on May 29 at the Carolina Theater. The team competed against 15 other acts from schools across the state.
Because of their win, each “Blaque Queens” member received Super Jams tickets and a trip to Florida to appear on “106 & Park” on BET in July. Dudley High Honors Academy Students
Dudley hosted the Senior Academy Banquet on Saturday, May 24 for students who attended the Early College Academies of Education, Engineering and Health Sciences at Dudley. Academy Director Johnette A. McCain hosted the event, naming 46 students “Shining Stars.”
McCain made special award presentations to each of her academy students, recognizing their academic achievements and personal triumphs. The Early College Academy Program is an initiative that allows students to engage in a rigorous high school program for three years, making them eligible their senior year to take first-year college courses on a college campus and earn dual credit.
The 2007-08 academy graduates were dually enrolled at Dudley and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro College, Bennett College and Guilford Technical Community College. High Schools That Work Award of Academic Excellence Winners
Thirty-three Southern High students received this year’s High Schools That Work (HSTW) Award of Educational Achievement. Students qualify for the award by completing a college-preparatory course of study in at least two of the three subject areas (English, mathematics or science), completing a concentration in a career/technical area, (mathematics/science or the humanities) and meeting performance goals in all three areas on the HSTW assessment.
Southern High had the third highest number of students to receive the award in North Carolina. Students who met the requirements will receive the 2008 HSTW Award of Academic Excellence given by the Southern Regional Education Board. Northwest High Students Raise Money for Earthquake Victims
Students from Northwest High raised more than $600 for earthquake victims through a bake sale. The sale will benefit victims of the earthquake in China, which occurred on May 12. For more information, please contact Principal Angelo Kidd at 336-605-3300.
Reedy Fork Elementary Supports Victory Junction Gang Camp
In three weeks, students at Reedy Fork raised $580 for Victory Junction Gang Camp. Students raised the money by filling up a tire with spare change. Mrs. Goodman’s kindergarten class raised $102, the most of any class. For their efforts, the class received a pizza party.
