GCS Employee of the Month for June 2008
The board recognized Kee-sha Pluim, After-School Care Enrichment Services (ACES) site coordinator , as the June Employee of the Month.

2007-08 GCS Rookie Teacher of the Year
The board recognized Nicholas Bush of Wiley Elementary as the 2007-08 GCS Rookie Teacher of the Year.

Spring Sports State Champions
The board recognized the 2A, 3A and 4A track individuals and 4A tennis doubles as state champions.

Haberman Interview Process
Dr. Peggy Thompson, chief human resources officer, presented to the board an update on the Haberman interview process.

2008-09 Insurance Coverage
The board approved the quotes for the following lines of coverage be accepted for fiscal year 2008-09: General liability - $238,979, Auto, Garage Keeper & Garage Liability - $230,403, Law Enforcement Liability - $1,500, High School Catastrophic - $24,551.25, Excess Worker’ Comp & Employer’s Liability - $92,216, Errors & Omissions - $78,000, Property Insurance -  $ 781,619

2007-08 Preliminary Writing and End-of-Grade (EOG) Math Scores
Dr. Gongshu Zhang, chief accountability and research officer, presented to the board an update on the 2007-08 preliminary writing and EOG math scores.

Architectural Selection Committee Update
The board approved staff to move forward with the construction delivery method on projects where staff and the architectural selection committee were in agreement.  

Utilization of Laughlin Elementary School
The board approved the continued use of Laughlin Elementary School.

Board Discussion

Continuation of Second Reading – Policy JCDAD, Student Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Environment
The board deferred discussion of this item until the June 26, 2008 meeting.

Continuation of Second Reading - Policy JCDAE, Sexual Harassment by Student
The board deferred discussion of this item until the June 26, 2008 meeting.

HUB Advisory Committee
The board approved to modify the make-up of the eleven members as reflected below: Two members representing historically underutilized businesses, one member representing non-minority businesses, two community MWBE advocates from the community, one member with demonstrated experience working with private, nonprofit, small and/or underutilized construction businesses, two members with experience in underwriting surety bonds for construction firms or underwriting loans for small businesses and minority/women-owned businesses, one member representing the Guilford County Board of County Commissioners and two members representing GCS.

Nomination to the GTCC Board of Trustees
The board approved Charlie Greene be appointed to another four-year term on the GTCC Board of Trustees.

Search Process for New Superintendent
Chairman Duncan led the board in a continued discussion regarding the search process for a new superintendent. The search firm has received 30 applications from across the state and country. The pool of candidates is strong and the search firm is conducting background checks of candidates. The board will meet the week of June 23, 2008 to review applications.

 

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
