2007 Project Fit America All Star Teacher of the Year
The board recognized Sara Kenney, elementary physical education specialist at Claxton Elementary, as the recipient of the 2007 Project Fit America All Star Teacher of the Year award.

Consent Agenda
The board approved the following items on the consent agenda:

  • Budget Amendments and Transfers
  • NCDOT Right-of-Way Encroachment Agreement for Sand Filter Bed Outlets, Southeast High School
  • Sanitary Sewer Easement for New Garden Friends School, Inc., E.P. Pearce Elementary School

Staff Reports

Construction Update
Andy LaRowe, executive director of facilities, presented to the board an update on the district’s construction projects.

  • SCALE - High Point Update – Selection Committee Recommendations
    The board approved a recommendation from the Architect Selection Committee that staff and the board attorney enter into negotiations with New Atlantic Contracting Inc. to provide services as Construction Management at Risk for SCALE - High Point, as presented by Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer.
  • Union Hill Elementary School Update – Demolition/Site Related Services
    Discussion of this item has been deferred until a later meeting.

After-School Shared Use Libraries
Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff, led the board in a continued discussion regarding the after-school shared use libraries.

Minority Male Initiative Report
Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff, presented to the board a report on the minority male initiative.

Middle School Character Education Program Update
Dr. John Morris, chief student services officer, presented to the board an update on the middle school character education program.

Magnet School Program Update
Tony Burks, director of magnet and choice schools, led the board in a continued discussion on the magnet school program. Also, Sharon Ozment, chief financial officer, presented to the board an update on the funding used to support magnet and high school option programs.

Board Discussion

Search Process for New Superintendent                        
Chairman Duncan led the board in a discussion regarding the search process for a new superintendent.

Eastern Guilford High School
The board voted to withdraw its request to remove Eastern Guilford High School from the bond project.

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
