GCS Employee of the Month for April 2008
The board recognized Tom Anderson, teacher at McIver Education Center , as the district’s April Employee of the Month.

GCS Volunteer of the Month for April 2008
The board recognized Jean Pudlo, a volunteer at The Early College at Guilford , as the district’s April Volunteer of the Month.

Staff Reports

Update on GCS Newcomers School, The High School Ahead Academy and Twilight High School
Dr. Terrence Young, chief information and special services officer, introduced Jake Henry, principal of the GCS Newcomers School and Mayra Hayes, ESOL director who presented to the board an update on the GCS Newcomers School. Additionally, Dr. David Roper, executive director for innovative services introduced Michelle Hayes, principal of The High School Ahead Academy and Pandora Bell, principal of the Twilight High School who presented an update on their schools.

Update on School Climate Task Force Recommendations
Sharon Ozment, co-interim superintendent, led the board in a continued discussion regarding the budgetary impact of the recommendations presented by the School Climate Task Force.

Implementation of Guilford Education Management System (GEMS)/Learning Village
Dr. Beth Folger, chief curriculum and organizational development officer, presented to the board an overview of GEMS, illustrating how it will enhance the educational process in GCS.

The board approved the 2008-09 Board of Education meeting schedule.

Search Process for New Superintendent
Chairman Duncan led the board in a continued discussion regarding the search process for a new superintendent. The board voted for board members to facilitate the upcoming public forums on the desired characteristics of the new superintendent. Ray and Associates will lead the two staff forums.

The board voted not to indicate a salary or salary range when advertising for the superintendent position.

 

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
