Recognitions

North Carolina Art Teacher of the Year

The Board recognized Joy Hudson, art teacher at Colfax Elementary, as the North Carolina Art Educators Association's Art Teacher of the Year.

2007 GCS Principal of the Year and Finalists

The Board announced and recognized the 2007 Wachovia Principal of the Year and Secondary Principal of the Year, Lewis Ferebee of Hairston Middle and the 2007 Elementary Principal of the Year, Judy Robbins of Madison Elementary. The Board also recognized the five Principal of the Year finalists: Angelo Kidd of Northwest High, Grenita Lathan of Washington Elementary, Linda Lyon of Gateway Education Center and William Stewart of Northwest Middle.

Naming of Facilities

1. Consideration for Naming of Guilford County Schools Transportation Facility

The Board voted that Moen Transportation Center name be presented for public comment.

2. Approval of Recommended Name for Grimsley High School Stadium Concession Stand.

The Board approved the use of the name John and Ruth Comer Concession and Press Box Facility for the Grimsley High School Stadium and Concession Stand.

3. Consideration for Naming of the Mendenhall Middle School Athletic Stadium

The Board voted that the name Deebs Young Memorial Stadium name be presented for public comment.

Magnet Grant Budget Update

Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff and Dr. Don Hare, executive director of federal and special programs, presented the Board with an update on the preliminary International Baccalaureate (IB) and Montessori magnet grant budget.

Safe Schools Plan Update
Dr. Terrence Young, chief information officer, presented the Board with an update on the Safe Schools Plan. The Board approved the Safe Schools Plan.

SAT Update
Dr. Gongshu Zhang, chief accountability & research officer, presented the Board with an SAT update.

Planning Guidelines for High School Scheduling
Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff, presented the Board with planning guidelines for high schools who want to change their schedule from block to traditional or from traditional to block.

Board Discussion

North Carolina State Board Association Conference Delegates
Chairman Duncan led a discussion of the North Carolina School Board Association delegates (NCSBA). NCSBA will hold its annual conference on November 13-15, 2006 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro , North Carolina .

Construction Review Panel Update
Chairman Duncan led the Board in a discussion regarding a construction review panel.
