The Board recognized Novel Douglas, office assistant at Washington Elementary, as the district’s March 2006 Employee of the Month.
Crystal Star Award of Excellence in Dropout Prevention
The Board received the prestigious 2005 National Dropout Prevention Center/Network’s Crystal Star Award for excellence in dropout recovery, intervention and prevention.

Staff Reports
Bids for Surplus School – Rena Bullock
The Board accepted a written offer of $163,000 for Rena Bullock School, as is, from Juanita Gladney and authorized staff to place advertisements for receiving upset bids as required by North Carolina General Statute (N.C.G.S.) 160A-269.
Colfax/Southwest Elementary Attendance Lines
The Board deferred this item until the 3/23 meeting to allow for a period of public comment.
Update on Execution of the Board’s Redistricting Decisions
Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff, provided the Board with an update on steps which have been and/or will be taken to communicate and execute the redistricting decisions. The Board subsequently requested that amended letters be forwarded to Shadybrook and Oak View parents apprising them that rising sixth-graders who have been rezoned from Welborn and Penn-Griffin to Ferndale, be notified that this will go into effect with the 2006-07 school year.
Wake County Superior Court Judge Manning’s Article
Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier discussed with the Board an article in which Judge Manning mentioned Dudley and Smith High Schools. The Board communicated their support of those two schools, discussed significant changes which have taken place and future options for Dudley and Smith.
Board Discussion
2006 Legislative Agenda
A) Agreement with the City of High Point – the Board voted to defer this item until the next meeting once all information has been received.
B) Board member Susan Mendenhall led the Board in a discussion regarding the 2006 draft of the Legislative Agenda. The Board made several recommendations and subsequently approved the revised document.
Reports from the Chairman
- The Board approved a request to join a lawsuit filed by the NC School Boards Association, which would not require eye exams for students prior to starting school
- The Board received a letter from the NAACP requesting an update on the district’s Minority and Women Business Enterprises (MWBE) participation. The Board will send Dr. Gongshu Zhang’s report and recommendations
- Chairman Duncan asked Board members to inform staff of their availability to discuss the upcoming budget
