Proclamation Honoring Rosa Parks

The Board recognized Ms. Rosa Parks for her courage, strength of perseverance and voice for inspiring a generation in America’s fight for Civil Rights.

Recognitions

Guilford County Schools’ Principal of the Year

The Board recognized the 2005-06 Principal of the Year and Elementary Principal of the Year, Martha Snavely, from Morehead Elementary. The Board also recognized, Tony Lamair Burks, II from The Early College at Guilford as the Secondary Principal of the Year. In addition, the Board recognized all Principal of the Year candidates, which included:

  • Tanya Feagins, Jefferson Elementary (Finalist)
  • Dr. William Price, Aycock Middle School (Finalist)
  • Dr. Randy Shaver, Western High (Finalist)
  • Charles Burns, Kernodle Middle

Consent Agenda

The Board approved the following items on the consent agenda:

  •  First Reading – Policy IC, Curriculum Development
  •  First Reading – Policy IDDA, Title I Parental Involvement
  •  Exercise of Option on Additional Land on Chestnut Drive

Staff Reports

Teacher Salaries

The Board discussed Gov. Mike Easley’s four-year plan to raise North Carolina’s teacher salaries above the national average. Sharon Ozment, chief financial officer, discussed possible funding options for the Board to consider. The Board also agreed to provide communications to the County Commissioners and NC Legislators regarding the impact the timing of the announcement will have on local budgets.

Construction Update

Joe Hill, director of construction, provided the Board with updates on the status of the district’s current construction projects. The discussion of Northern High was deferred to another meeting. The Board voted to approve an additional $1.5 million to finish renovations at McLeansville Elementary. The Board also voted to approve contracts for the Southern Middle School project.

Redistricting Plans

Eric Hoekstra, district demographer, presented the Board with the high school map that assigns students to their closest or next-closest school. The Board requested that elementary and middle school maps with feeder patterns be provided as well as revisions to earlier maps based on comments/suggestions received from the public for the 11/8/05 meeting.

Board Discussions

State Lottery

The discussion regarding the state lottery was deferred to the 11/8/05 meeting.

North Carolina State Board Association (NCSBA) Conference Delegates

The Board voted that Board members Dot Kearns, Dr. Nancy Routh, Kris Cooke and Amos Quick would serve as voting delegates at the annual conference.

Reports from the Chairman

Chairman Alan Duncan requested approval from the Board to move forward with scheduling quarterly meetings with the Board of County Commissioners. Chairman Duncan also announced that during the County Commissioners meeting on November 3, 2005, a proclamation will be presented for American Education Week.
