Board Memorandum for Meeting of March 4, 2008

I. Call to Order
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will call the meeting to order. 

II. Pledge of Allegiance and Moment of Silence
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will call on a member of the board to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.

III. Recognitions
A. GCS Employee of the Month for March 2008
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the board will recognize Nancy Abel, adapted physical education teacher at schools across the district, as the district’s March Employee of the Month. If you have any questions regarding this item, contact District Relations at 370-8386, prior to the meeting.

B. GCS Volunteer of the Month for March 2008
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the board will recognize Kristi Bryson, a volunteer at Rankin Elementary, as the district’s March Volunteer of the Month.  If you have any questions regarding this item, contact District Relations at 370-8386, prior to the meeting.

C. Winter Sports State Championship Recognition
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the board will recognize high school students who have earned the state champion designation either as an individual competitor or team member in the areas of swimming, indoor track and wrestling. If you have any questions regarding this item, please contact District Relations at 370-8386 or Herb Goins, district athletic director, at 370-8950, prior to the meeting.

D. Recognition of the Smith High School Gospel Choir
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the board will recognize the Smith High School Gospel Choir for awards received at the Gospel Choir Olympics. If you have any questions regarding this item, please contact District Relations at 370-8386, prior to the meeting.

IV. Public Comments
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will call on members of the public who have requested an opportunity to address the board.

V. Approval of Agenda

VI. Consent Agenda
A.  Meeting Minutes
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the minutes of the January 31 Regular Meeting, February 7 Regular Meeting, February 19 Regular Meeting and February 25 Special Called Meeting will be presented for approval.  If you have questions or suggested revisions, please contact Kathy Gwynn at 370-8992, prior to the meeting.

B. Personnel Action Reports
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the consent agenda includes personnel actions as noted in the monthly Personnel Action Report requiring board approval.  Should there be any additional personnel action requiring board approval, you will receive notification prior to the meeting. VII. Staff Reports      
A. Approval of the 2008-09 Magnet and NCLB Opt-Out Schools
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Doyle Craven, director of student assignment, and Kelly Hales, Title I director, will present to the board a recommendation to approve the proposed magnet and NCLB opt-out schools for the 2008-09 school year. B. Expansion of Mandarin Chinese Program
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Dr. Beth Folger, chief curriculum and professional development officer, will present to the board a recommendation to expand the Mandarin Chinese Program at Northwood Elementary, Northwest and Page High Schools for the 2008-09 school year. C. Superintendent’s Goals for 2008-09
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Dr. Eric Becoats, chief of staff, will present to the board information regarding the superintendent’s goals for 2008-09. If you have questions regarding this item, please contact Dr. Becoats at 378-8838, prior to the meeting.

VIII.   Board Discussion           
A. School Climate Task Force
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will call on Sharon Ozment, chief finance officer, to lead the board in a discussion regarding the budgetary impact of the recommendations presented by the School Climate Tack Force. In addition, she will provide a preliminary assessment of the costs associated with those recommendations. B. Search Process for New Superintendent
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will lead the board in a continued discussion regarding the search process for a new superintendent. If you have questions regarding this item, please contact Chairman Duncan at 378-5315, prior to the meeting.

IX. Reports from the Chairman, if needed
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, Chairman Duncan will share reports of the board’s activities, should there be any events to be reported.

X. Board Comments 
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, board members will each be allowed two minutes to make remarks, as they deem appropriate.

XI. Closed Session, if needed
At the meeting of March 4, 2008, the board will address business requiring a closed session, if needed.
