GUILFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
SPECIAL CALLED MEETING
GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

The Guilford County Board of Education met in a special called meeting for the purpose of conducting a line item review of the 2007-08 budget at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2007 at 712 North Eugene Street, Greensboro, North Carolina.  The following board members were present:  Jeff Belton, Kris Cooke, Darlene Garrett (arrived at 4:07 p.m.), Garth Hébert, Dot Kearns, Amos Quick (arrived at 4:38 p.m.), Nancy Routh and Anita Sharpe (arrived at 4:54 p.m.). Board members Walter Childs, Alan Duncan and Deena Hayes were absent.  Also present was Superintendent Terry Grier.

Call to Order

Superintendent Terry Grier called the meeting to order at 4:01 p.m.

2007-08 Budget Line-Item Review and Discussion
Chief Finance Officer Sharon Ozment presented budget material including line-item detail for local current expense fund, administrative department budgets and line-item budget by funding source. 

The Board then reviewed the administrative department budgets: 

  • Board of Education
  • Superintendent
  • Chief of Staff
  • District Relations/Communications
  • Financial Services
  • Human Resources
  • Accountability and Research
  • Organizational Development
  • Student Support Services
  • Academic Improvement
  • Operations
  • Auxiliary Services

Board members were given the opportunity to ask questions about individual department budgets and request additional information as needed.

Following the review of administrative department budgets, the board discussed the line-item detail for the 2007-08 local current expense fund.  Ms. Ozment’s spreadsheet provided the difference in each line item from the 2006-07 budget based on fund-balance projections. Discussion of this line-item detail will be continued at the May 8 board meeting.

Adjournment
With no further business, at 8:05 p.m., motion was made by Darlene Garrett, seconded by Kris Cooke, to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed upon unanimous voice vote.
