The Guilford County Board of Education met in a special called meeting to discuss
the naming of the park at Montlieu Math and Science Academy on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 712 North Eugene Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. The following board members were present: Jeff Belton, Kris Cooke, Garth Hébert, Dot Kearns, Amos Quick and Nancy Routh. Board members Walter Childs, Alan Duncan, Darlene Garrett, Deena Hayes and Anita Sharpe were absent. Also present was Superintendent Terry Grier.
Call to Order
Vice-Chairman Amos Quick called the meeting to order at 7:38 a.m.
Pledge of Allegiance and Moment of Silence
Board member Kris Cooke led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
Approval of the Agenda
Vice-Chairman Quick asked board members to review the meeting agenda and called for a motion to approve or amend it. Motion was made by Dot Kearns, seconded by Nancy Routh, to approve the agenda as presented. The motion passed upon unanimous voice vote.
Approval of Recommended Name for the Park at Montlieu Math and Science Academy
Superintendent Terry Grier presented to the board a recommendation to name the park at Montlieu Math and Science Academy The Garry G. Burnett Park at Montlieu. If the name is approved, staff will contact the community representative to review the plans for any signage the community effort would support. At the April 26, 2007 board meeting, pursuant to the procedure on the naming of schools (FDCA-P), a nomination form and accompanying support documents were provided by Mr. Ed Price, on behalf of the citizens of High Point, for review and consideration. After reviewing the materials and hearing from several members of the public, the board voted to propose the name The Garry G. Burnett Park at Montlieu.
In keeping with the procedure, the proposed name was posted on the district Web site for a period of public comment and feedback. One comment was received in support of the proposed name minus the middle initial ‘G’.
Motion was made by Dot Kearns, seconded by Kris Cooke, to approve the use of the name The Garry G. Burnett Park at Montlieu for the park at Montlieu Math and Science Academy with authorization for staff to move forward with plans for any signage the community effort will support. The motion passed upon unanimous show of hands.
Adjournment
With no further business, at 7:41 a.m., motion was made by Kris Cooke, seconded by Garth Hébert, to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed upon unanimous voice vote.
