GUILFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
SPECIAL CALLED MEETING
GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

The Guilford County Board of Education met in a special called meeting to discuss the magnet grant on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 712 North Eugene Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. The following board members were present: Jeff Belton, Walter Childs, Kris Cooke, Alan Duncan, Darlene Garrett, Deena Hayes, Garth Hébert, Dot Kearns, Amos Quick and Nancy Routh. Board member Anita Sharpe was absent. Also present were Superintendent Terry Grier and Attorney Jill Wilson.

Call to Order

Chairman Duncan called the meeting to order at 1:22 p.m.

Approval of Submission of Magnet Grant

The “Resolution Adopting Voluntary Desegregation Plan” and the “Voluntary Desegregation Plan” required for the submission of the magnet grant application were reviewed by the board. Attorney Jill Wilson asked that an additional line be included in the “Voluntary Desegregation Plan” document. Under the section entitled “MSAP Magnet Project,” the first paragraph should read, “The Board has approved six additional magnet schools serving elementary, middle and high school students, which it will implement when it receives funding pursuant to the MSAP Magnet Project.”

Motion was made by Kris Cooke, seconded by Nancy Routh, to approve the “Resolution Adopting Voluntary Desegregation Plan” and the “Voluntary Desegregation Plan” with inclusion of the additional wording as recommended by Attorney Jill Wilson. The motion passed upon majority electronic vote of 7-0-3 as follows: Ayes – Jeff Belton, Kris Cooke, Alan Duncan, Darlene Garrett, Garth Hébert, Dot Kearns and Nancy Routh; Abstain – Walter Childs, Deena Hayes and Amos Quick.

Adjournment

With no further business, at 1:27 p.m., motion was made by Kris Cooke, seconded by Deena Hayes, to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed upon unanimous voice vote.
